Frequently Asked Questions About the Giant Schnauzer Breed
Yes, with proper training and socialization, Giant Schnauzers can be excellent family dogs. They are loyal, protective, and love to be involved with their people. They’re best for active households that can provide structure and engagement.
Males typically reach 26–28 inches tall and weigh 85–100+ pounds. Females are slightly smaller, standing 23–26 inches tall and weighing 65–90 pounds.
They are a low-shedding breed, but they do require regular grooming. Their dense, wiry coat needs to be brushed weekly and professionally groomed or hand-stripped every 6–8 weeks.
With proper socialization from a young age, they can be good with other pets — but they may be dominant toward same-sex dogs or reactive if untrained. Early exposure and consistent boundaries are key.
Giant Schnauzers are highly intelligent and eager to learn — but they’re also independent and strong-willed. They require a confident, experienced owner who uses firm, fair, and consistent training methods.
Yes, when raised around respectful children and properly trained. However, due to their size and drive, supervision is always recommended, especially with smaller kids.
This breed is not ideal for first-time dog owners unless they are truly committed to training and seeking professional guidance. Giant Schnauzers thrive with structure, confidence, and clarity — they’re not couch potatoes or low-maintenance companions.
At Opulent Giant Schnauzers, our dogs are carefully selected for structure, temperament, and health. We raise our puppies with early socialization, ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation), and place them with families committed to maintaining their legacy.
A Guardian Home is a carefully selected family who raises one of our top breeding dogs in their home as a loved pet while we retain breeding rights for a limited time (usually 5–7 years). Once terms are complete, full ownership is transferred to the guardian at no cost.
Yes — approved Guardian families receive one of our highest-quality Giant Schnauzers at no cost. In return, they agree to follow care and breeding guidelines while we retain ownership until the contract ends.
Guardian contracts typically last 5–7 years, depending on the dog’s health and breeding performance. The exact number of breedings (usually 3 for females, up to 6 for males) is agreed upon in advance.
Yes! The dog lives with you as your personal pet. The only times they return to us are for:
• Breeding or health testing (1–3 days)
• Whelping and raising puppies (6–8 weeks for females)
We do our best to match each Guardian Home with the right dog based on experience, lifestyle, and personality. You may not get to choose a puppy like a typical buyer, but we will always place our most well-rounded dogs in Guardian homes.
Not until we release the dog from their breeding agreement. Altering a dog early violates the contract and results in immediate repossession. We handle or cover spay/neuter once the contract is fulfilled.
You cover the day-to-day costs of caring for the dog:
• Food, grooming, and general vet care.
We cover all breeding-related costs, such as:
• Health testing, artificial insemination, c-sections (if needed), etc.
Yes — Guardian homes must have a secure, fenced yard and allow us to do a home visit before approval. This ensures a safe and suitable environment for our dogs.
We ask you to notify us immediately if you plan to move or experience any changes that could affect your ability to care for the dog. Open communication is key.
Once all agreed breedings are complete and the dog is spayed/neutered, full ownership is transferred to you and the contract is officially closed.
You can fill out our Guardian Home Application right here on our website. Once submitted, we’ll follow up to schedule a phone interview and a home visit.
